Early family history

It is generally believed the family takes its name from the ancient feudal estates of Ralphistoun [Ralph’s Town], named after the younger son of the Earl of Fife, dating to the early 12th century.

In 1704, a large part of the Ralston lands were sold. Nearly a century earlier some clan members went to Ireland, where they were free to practice their Presbyterian faith. From Ireland and Scotland many eventually made their way to America.
